Gbemi’s story is the story of a lot of applicants today with wrong email addresses. In the world of job applications, little things can speak volumes. Before a recruiter even reads your CV or cover letter, they see something else; your email address. And believe it or not, this tiny detail can make or break your chances of getting noticed for the right reasons.
Unfortunately, many job seekers, especially fresh graduates and early-career professionals, make the mistake of using informal or inappropriate email addresses when applying for jobs. While it might seem minor, it communicates a lot about your level of professionalism which recruiters are looking at immediately they see your sent application for the first time.
Examples like babygal4eva@yahoo.com, freshboi001@gmail.com, moneymustbemade2025@gmail.com, mhizchutie@gmail.com, bhadgurlshayla1104@gmail.com, nigeriagobetter2005@gmail.com and badboy2002@gmail.com are informal email addresses that can make HRs ignore your applications. Many of these emails were created during the 2go, JAMB, WAEC, and cyber café days, when café attendants would advise you to add your date of birth and random words so you wouldn’t forget your email.
A lot of people got their mails during that time and while it made sense back then, today, such unprofessional email addresses can seriously hurt your chances with recruiters. Real talk? Employers may perceive such email addresses as unserious, immature and unprofessional, even if the rest of your application is solid.
A formal, professional email address typically includes your first name, last name, or a simple combination of both. If your preferred email is already taken, you can add a number or a punctuation mark but avoid using nicknames or slangs. Examples of professional email addresses are t.tomutum@gmail.com and careerex24@gmail.com.
When we revamp our clients CVs, we pay attention to their email address, and advise them to create and send across a professional email address if they don’t already have one. That’s why we are the best in this market!
In today’s competitive job market, something as simple as having a clean, professional email address can make a significant difference. The key is to choose an email that HR managers can easily recognize and remember. If your email doesn’t represent who you are today, it’s never too late to create one that does. Take control of your personal brand, starting with your email address.
